“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Curriculum Intent |
Mathematics is the art of logic and problem solving, and as such, it permeates every area of life. Whatever direction our students decide to pursue, Mathematics will equip them with the necessary skills and abilities to become independent, determined and resilient individuals. We believe that when our students can reason successfully and convey complex ideas in an effective manner, that they will be successful, contributing members of any team and become well-rounded individuals for their future aspirations. |
Powerful knowledge in Maths |
Mathematical knowledge aims to empower students to develop and apply problem solving skills focusing on overarching and spiralling mathematical components: Algebra, Number, Ratio, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. Our aim is to encourage students to develop mathematical behaviour and as such our curriculum encourages students to develop deeper understanding to make links across curriculum areas. The emphasis is on empowering students to notice, make connections, explain, justify and prove. |
Curriculum Features |
We provide an ambitious and inclusive educational experience for our students where they are provided with opportunities to immerse themselves in the subject. Mathematics is used to drive learners to think and work independently with a powerful sense of curiosity and resilience. Our practice and curriculum embeds a deep understanding, enabling students to master key concepts to develop mathematical fluency and confidence. Problem solving, thinking and reasoning are key concepts at the heart of our curriculum, these essential skills serve our students well to access a wide range of careers in their future. We focus on overarching and spiralling mathematical component, supported by the use of the White Rose Maths scheme of work: Algebra, Number, Ratio, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. Students follow a spiral curriculum where these key components are revisited and built upon, this is developed through a range of teaching methods including live modelling, adaptive teaching, and the use of manipulatives. We adapt our teaching to the individual, by setting high expectations, providing challenge and support at all times to promote students to ‘be the best they can be’. We ensure our students gain a love and appreciation for all of the mathematics around them. We seek to develop confident mathematicians and foster a love of the discipline. We encourage our students to use mathematical language to express their understanding of key concepts and to make links between components to demonstrate how mathematics is present in the real everyday world. |
