“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
Oscar Wilde
Curriculum Intent
Drama as a medium gives our students a springboard to explore, question and challenge themes, topics and issues that feed into their everyday life and wider society. The ability to explore these topics within a safe environment in a creative way, builds confidence and self-awareness in our students which has a positive impact on their wider school life. Students of drama are hardworking and resilient, risk-takers, think outside the box and value both individual creativity and collaboration.
Powerful knowledge in Drama
Here at Breckland School it is our ambition to use outstanding Drama lessons to inspire our students and expose them to the rich and diverse world of theatre. Our mission is also to embed within them a life-long passion and love for the Arts and prepare them with the skills to create, evaluate, analyse and challenge them within the classroom and beyond.
Curriculum Features
At Breckland School we boast a broad Drama curriculum, taught on a half termly basis, which gives students the opportunity to explore, analyse and evaluate theatre that spans a wide range of cultural and historical value (Antigone, Blood Brothers, DNA, Warhorse, Oliver Twist, Shakespeare, Commedia de Arte and many more). Students of Drama will also work alongside the methods and ideals of famous practitioners such as Stanislavski, Brecht, Artaud and Katie Mitchell, who used theatre as a method of understanding the world and fighting back against oppression and normality. Drama at Breckland School also delves into what goes into theatre beyond acting, also scriptwriting, design and directing and how these elements synthesise to create high quality, engaging pieces of theatre.
Curriculum Enrichment
Drama at Breckland School aims to provide our students with the cultural capital to see them through life and to foster a love for different aspects of theatre. Drama provides them with a broad exposure to plays and theatre styles of different countries, time periods, written by playwrights of different nationalities and genders. As well as lesson time, we offer extracurricular activities such as Drama clubs, school productions and musicals and opportunities to perform their work in front of an audience and the wider community. Students will also be given the chance to visit theatres and watch live productions in a professional setting, giving them a taste of life in the theatre.
