“My task is to relate the stories that are told, I don’t necessarily have to believe them”

Curriculum intent
We believe that the purpose of a history curriculum is to provide students with an academically rigorous and fulfilling experience of studying the past, exposing them to a wealth of cultural capital to which they are entitled. By building knowledge of key events and developments in British and world history we empower students to understand the world around them and help them develop into thoughtful, responsible, and active citizens.
Powerful knowledge in Ancient History
Ancient History is all about discovering the world that happened prior to 0AD. This time period is constantly being delved into by Historians as it is difficult to be certain of what happened due to issues with the evidence we have available. Therefore students get to use these Ancient stories to try and piece together the past for themselves – actively becoming Ancient Historians in the process! The Ancient civilisations of the Persians, Greeks, Romans and Egyptians have such an important place in understanding the world as we know it, this subject allows students to fully immerse themselves into these civilisations and understand what they have to tell us about where we are today.
Curriculum Features
Ancient History is currently offered as an option subject at KS4. Students who opt for GCSE Ancient History will follow the OCR course studying in depth the Persian kings who founded and expanded their empire, the Ancient Greeks as they depose tyrannical rule and welcome democracy, Ancient Rome from its foundations and through its developmental early years, ending with a look at Cleopatra as the powerful ruler of Egypt. Students are exposed to a range of ancient sources and will develop their skills of source analysis whilst making their own conclusions about the past.
Curriculum Enrichment
Students will be exposed both in class and through home learning to current scholarship thinking about the ancient civilisations studied. We also aim to run trips to help students engage further with the museum culture by visiting Norwich Castle museum and also the British History museum.
